Design Studies Students attended UM Batik Workshop

Ideas come in many forms that are around us. In Malaysia, there are many visual cultural art forms that can serve as inspirations to design work. Batik is a popular yet many times an underappreciated form of Malaysian visual cultural art forms. As the first year design students embark on their journey of discovering  various visual solutions to address design problems, referring to the local scene is one of the best ways to re-look into local art forms such as batik.

Thus, the Design Studies 1: Communication Theory students of the August 2016 intake had participated in a batik workshop that was organised by En. Yazmin Hassan from the Museum of Asian Art in University of Malaya. The 3-hour workshop exposed the students to the entire process of batik-making, from tracing the image with wax on to a piece of fabric made for batik printing, colouring, setting, washing to the final product. Although it was a lengthy process, the students had a fulfilling experience.
